LOHRI , a festival with multiple origins

There are many origins of Lohri:

Main theme of Lohri :

  • The belief that Lohri is the cultural celebration of the winter solistice
  • According to folk lore, in ancient times Lohri was celebrated on the eve of winter solstice day.
  • It is for this reason that people believe day light is meant to increase from the day after Lohri when the sun starts its northward journey.
  • Accordingly, the day after Lohri is celebrated as Maghi Sangrand from when the days are meant to start getting longer.
  • People believe nights gradually shorten "by the grain of one sesame seed" once the winter solstice passes.

Bonfire:

  • A key feature of Lohri is the bonfire
  • Lighting of the fire has been common in winter solstice festivals throughout time and the world.
  • It signifies the return of longer days.
  • The bonfire is an ancient tradition, forming a key part of Lohri traditions.

Lohri and harvest festival:

  • Cut sugarcane

Semisolid sugar cane juice drying in another pan for preparation of Jaggery.
Lohri is traditionally associated with the harvest of the rabi crops. The traditional time to harvest sugarcane crops is January and therefore, Lohri is seen by some to be a harvest festival.

  • Food

Punjabi Sarson da Saag and Makki di roti, radish, Jaggery (Gur), ground nuts (peanuts), Sesame seeds (til).

It is traditional to eat Gajak, Sarson da saag with Makki di roti, radish, ground nuts and jaggery. The tradition to eat saag on Lohri and Maghi has been ongoing since time immemorial. It is also traditional to eat "til rice" which is made by mixing jaggery, sesame seeds and rice.

Other legends of the origin of Lohri festival:

  • Some people believe that Lohri has derived its name from Loi, the wife of Saint Kabir.
  • There is a legend amongst some people that Lohri comes from the word 'loh', which means the light and the warmness of fire.
  • Lohri is also called lohi in rural Punjab.
  • According to another legend Holika and Lohri were sisters.
  • While the former perished in the Holi fire, the latter survived with Prahlad. Eating of til (sesame seeds) and rorhi is considered to be essential on Lohri day.
  • Perhaps the words til and rorhi merged to become tilorhi, which eventually got shortened to Lohri.

Other parts of India:
Lohri coincides with the festivals of :

  • Pongal,
  • Bhogali
  • Bihu and
  • Bhogi.

Festivals in other countries:

  • Stonehaven Fireballs Ceremony 2003:

Winter solstice festivals have been incorporated into other festivals which are celebrated in various regions around the world. The festival of Yule is observed during Christmas celebrations whereby a log is burnt to commemorate the winter solstice.

  • Hogmanay:

The festival of Hogmanay is celebrated on new year’s day. The fire festival of Stonehaven in Scotland is the direct descendant of lighting winter solstice bonfires. Another event is observed every 11 January when the flaming Clavie (a barrel full of staves) is carried round in Burghead and is wedged on the Doorie Hill. When it is burnt out, people take the smouldering embers to bring good luck for the coming year.

  • Any festival with Punjabi origin seems incomplete without a song. There are many songs for this festival. But one of the famous songs of them is :

Lohri famous song:

                                                        Sunder mundriye ho!
Tera kaun vicharaa ho!
Dullah Bhatti walla ho!
Dullhe di dhee vyayae ho!
Ser shakkar payee ho!
Kudi da laal pathaka ho!
Kudi da saalu paata ho!
Salu kaun samete!
Chache choori kutti! zamidara lutti!
Zamindaar sudhaye!
Bade bhole aaye!
Ek bhola reh gaya!
Sipahee far ke lai gaya!
Sipahee ne mari itt!
Sanoo de de Lohri, te teri jeeve jodi!
(Cry or howl!)
Bhaanvey ro te bhaanvey pitt!

A moral story: "A Young Boy . . . "

A young boy enters a barber shop and the barber whispers to his Customer,
“This is the dumbest kid in the world. Watch while I prove it to you.”
The barber puts a five rupee coin and 2 in the other, then calls the boy over and asks,
“Which do you want, son?”
The boy takes the two one rupee coins and leaves.
“What did I tell you?” said the barber. “That kid never learns!”
Later, when the customer leaves, he sees the same young boy coming out of
the ice cream store. “Hey, son! May I ask you a question?
Why did you take two one rupee coins instead of five rupee coin?”
The boy licked his cone and replied,
“Because THE DAY I TAKE THE FIVE RUPEE COIN, THE GAME IS OVER

Beautiful Bhajan from Krishna's diary . . .

O Kaanha ab to murli ki, madhur suna do taan
O Kaanha ab to murli ki, madhur suna do taan

Main hu teri, prem deewani, mujhko tum pehchaan
madhur suna do taan,

O kaanha ab to murli ki, madhur suna do taan

Jabse tum sang maine apne, naina jod liye hai
Kya maiya kya babul sabse, rishte thod liye hai

Tere milan ko, vyakul hai ye, kabse mere praan
madhur suna do taan

O kaanha, ab to murli ki, madhur suna do taan

Saagar se bhi gehari mere, prem ki geheraai
lok laaj Kul ki mariyada, saj kar main toh aayee

Meri preeti se, o nirmohi, ab na bano anjaan
madhur suna do taan

O kaanha ab to murli ki, madhur suna do taan

Main hu teri, prem deewani, mujhko tum pehchaan
madhur suna do taan, madhur suna do taan
madhur suna do taan

Another speedily growing business: Psychiatrist

With the growing technological world, its become so easy to connect to more number of people around the world. It has become so easy to keep in contact with our family/friends even how far they may be. Its so easy to increase and have a good social circle.

But, thanks to our growing ego, fights, disputes, jealousy that we have gone so far from the ones who are so near to us.

And with time, this distance increases so much that now people don't feel comfortable opening their heart in-front of the people they know or they pretend to be close to.

And slowly and slowly they make themselves fall with another speedily growing these days: Stress, Depression, Loneliness.

And then finally comes the time to contact a "Psychiatrist", who being unknown is supposed to listen to the problems and disputes going on inside our heart.

Its very saddening, we should have used technologies in a better way. Even the person or the team developing these technologies should have first thought that these would be used for some betterment. but with the advantages comes disadvantages along.

All these new discoveries, might have reduced the distance with the ones that are far away but have certainly increased the distance from the ones who are the nearest.

There is definitely a big problem when a person is with you, you can see him/her daily, you can talk to him/her daily and still feels lonely and not comfortable to talk to you and comes a need to contact a Psychiatrist.

Its start of ending humanity from the world.

Flow of Unexpected Expectations . . .

As a kid, I was always concerned about the percentage of marks I would score in secondary and senior secondary examinations.
I thought that the society will always classify me on the basis of these figures.

Soon, I grew old to realize that these marks will have very minute repercussions on my existence. I was told that it is the rank in the IIT examinations which matters the most. Until I reached the college, my local universe was segregated on the basis of JEE ranks.

But, during the first week after I landed in my college, I was enlightened with the fact that final grades (CGPA) are the only thing that can dissolve all my previous sins—the only practical thing which I should bet upon. I worked hard to get good grades, till the placement season started. Unfortunately, all my previous assumptions went wrong during those 2-3 months, and everything percolated to packages and companies. During the placement session, irrespective of the nicknames and crazy graduation histories, everyone is treated as a single dimension vector with his package as the unit vector.

After one year of struggle in jobs, I realized that there is more to explore to like MBA, GRE, Career, Dreams… blah, blah.

Just when I thought I was about to decode all the philosophical dimensions of human identity, the universe threw a complex, insolvable dimension on me—honeymoon photos of my friends on Facebook.

Marks, packages, career, dreams, and everything else sound so superfluous to me now. I am forced to categorize people on the basis of their honeymoon destinations.

Ae zindagi - A beautiful Poem !

😦 😯 😮 😭 😶 😴 😫 😪 😩 😨 😧

Lout aata hu ghar ki taraf, Har roz thaka-haara,
Aaj tak samajh nahi aaya ki,
Jeene ke liye kaam karta hu ya Kaam karne ke liye jeeta hu!

Bachpan mein sabse adhik baar pucha gaya sawaal -
"Bade ho kar kya banna hai?"
Jawab ab mila hai, - "fir se baccha banna hai."

"Thak gaya hu teri noukari se ae zindagi
Munasif hoga mera hisaab karde...!!"

Dosto se bichad kar ye haqeeqat khuli...
Beshak, kaminey the par ronak unhi se thi!!

Bhari jeb (pocket) ne 'duniya' ki pehchaan Karwai
aur
khaali jeb (pocket) ne 'apno' ki.

Jab lage paisa kamane, to samajh aaya,
Shonk to maa-baap ke paiso se poore hote the,
Apne paiso se to sirf zarurte poori hoti hai!

Hasne ki iccha na ho,
         To bhi hasna padta hai...

Koi jab puche kaise ho..??
To maze mein hu kehna padta hai...

Ye zindagi ka rangmunch hai dosto...
Yaha har ek ko natak karna padta hai...

"Maachis ki zarurat yaha nahi padti...
Yaha aadmi aadmi se jalta hai...!!!

Duniya ke bade se bade scientist,
Ye dhundh rahe hai ki mangal grah par jivan hai ya nahi,
Par aadmi ye nahi dhundh raha,
Ki jivan mein mangal hai ya nahi...!!

Neend aur maut me kya fark h... kisi ne kya khubsoorat jawab diya hai...
Neend aadhi maut hai aur maut ek mukkamal neend hai !!!

Zindagi to apne hi tareeke se chalti hai,
Auro ke sahare to janaze utha karte hai.

Subh hoti hai, Shaam hoti hai,
Umar yuhi tamaam hoti hai.
Koi ro kar dil behlaata hai
aur
Koi hass kar chup chaap dard chuppata hai !!!

Kya karamaat hai kismat ki,
Zinda insaan pani me doobta hai,
aur murda pani me tair ke dikhta hai !!

Conductor se ho gayi hai zindagi
Safar bhi roz ka hai,
aur jana bhi kahin nai hai !!

Lakeerein bhi badi ajeeb hoti hai,
mathey par kheech jaye to qismat bna deti hai,
zameen par kheech jaye to sarhade bna deti hai,
khaal pe kheech jaye to khoon nikal deti hai,
Aur rishtey pe kheech jaye to deewar bna deti hai !!!

Har sawaal ka jawab kab se dhoondh rahe hai,
Par ek din kamre par jaate hi sab sawal ke jawaab mil gaye

aur
darwaaze ne khaa, apni manzil ko paane ke liye pura zor lgaao.

Respect Girl / Women in the society

Very recently, SC has ordered strict ban on sex determination tests and has asked all search engines to remove all related information and that too with a strict deadline.

The reason being: A sudden fall in the sex ratio of females, with a study that many males are not able to get females for them for getting married. But what? Still people will not understand the need to respect a girl, a wife, a daughter, a daughter-in-law, a mother.

There have been so many videos getting shared daily on social websites encouraging respect for women, with so many likes and shares, but is that actually happening in real lifes?

Are that number of people liking such videos and posts really respecting women in their family? Are those people ready to accept Girl as their child?

Still, we have so many people who are not actually doing this in real life. The worst part sometimes, a women is not doing this to another women, The elder ladies of our society still are not open in welcoming a "Girl Child" as their grand daughter. Still some despite being women themselves are not open to give the same respect to their daughter-in-laws as they should get.

Its a high time now.

Its a message to such people, please stop this and change your thoughts with time.
If you all want your sons to get married, welcome a girl child in your family too.
If you want your family to grow, respect your daughter-in-laws too.
If you want to be happy, respect and praise all the women in the family.
Its very easy to like a video, share a video, now its time to show all women their respect in the family.

START WITH WOMEN AT YOUR HOME.
Its never late for a good start. #FightForWomenRespect.

Indian Society: still needs changes especially with their thoughts

However educational qualifications , people gain here...
However high living standards people achieve here....
their thinking, their mentality still remains cheap when it comes to the topic Girl child or a Boy child.

Still I can see many people being inhuman not with the strangers but with their own family.

This society today supports only the one with more number of "Green notes", so called money.

"Jiske pass aaj paisa hai, uske sab bhai hai.... uske alawa kisi ki koi family nahi hai, koi izzat nahi hai, koi value nahi hai."

Still there are many differences between Daughter and Daughter-In-Law.
"Beti ki shaadi waha ho, jaha dahej na dena pade... par bahu wo aaye jo dahej me khoob sona-chandi le k aaye."

And even after this much, the girl leaves one home, all relations, all love and still does not get anything in return. No respect, No love, No family.

Is this what is getting being taught in today's world?
Is this what the people of our society should be?
Is this what a girl deserves?

Girl's parents scarifies all their life, their dreams, their earnings and make a girl child capable to earn enough so that she can get respect when she goes to her in-laws.
They keep collecting for so-called, most important event "Marriage", gives her everything and what the girl does, she leaves them.
Now she is married, she has to take permission from her in-laws just to meet her parents for a day.

Why? Why she has to do so?
What? What is she getting there? She sacrificed everything what she had till now for them. Is she getting respect there? Is she getting love there? Is she happy there?

No one cares

Very few people answers "yes" to this question.

Being on topic Indian society, I cannot miss the cruelty thing happening these days. People have been so selfish that you really can't rely on  anyone. Honesty is something which has totally been vanished somewhere.

Day-by-day, people are becoming just in-human. Everywhere there is so much cruelty, that each one is behind the other to destroy, to kill.

The word "competition" holds less reference now, but the word "Dushman" is more correct.

I guess very few know the meaning and really follow the meaning of the word "Family and Relatives". People are losing everything and may be if I am not wrong the reason could be same "Green Notes" (money).

Really worried how would the next generation be? When the root base is getting so bad with thoughts and actions, how the next generation be like?

Hopefully they somehow learn the meaning of "Family, Friends and Relatives".

Hoping the next generation completely removes the concept of "Dahej" and redefine the word "Marriage" with positive meanings.

Hoping people move forward for achieving success, compete with others, but that competition shouldn't mean "Killing them".

Hopefully, as people achieve higher education, gain heights with life standards and monetary terms, they also achieve heights with their thoughts and mentality, else the world is towards an end for sure.

Sapno ki duniya bhi ajeeb hoti hai.....
Jhuthi hi sahi par har pal khushi naseeb to hoti hai......
Beshaq aate hai sapne kuch pal ke liye....

सपनो की दुनिया भी अजीब होती है,
        झूठी ही सही पर हर पल ख़ुशी नसीब तो होती है.
बेशक़ आते है सपने कुछ पल के लिए,

Time to change the perception

A pregnant mother asked her daughter, “What do u want- A brother or a sister?“
Daughter:- Brother
Mother:- Like whom?
Daughter:- Like RAVAN
Mother:- What the hell are you saying? Are you out of your mind?
Daughter:- Why not Mom? He left all his Royalship &
Kingdom, all because his sister was disrespected.
Even after picking up his enemy’s wife, he didn’t ever touch her. Why wouldn’t I want to have a brother like him?
What would I do with a brother like Ram who left his pregnant wife after listening to a “Dhobi” though his wife always stood by his side like a shadow? After giving “Agni Pareeksha” & suffering 14 years of exile.
Mom, you being a wife & sister to someone, until when will you keep on asking for a “RAM” as your son???
Mother was in tears…

Moral:- No one in the world is good or bad. It's just everyone's interpretation about someone. Change Ur perception..

Fall in love 3 times....

Before you can grow up, you must fall in love 3 times.

  • Once you must fall in love with your best friend, ruining your friendship forever. This will teach you who your true friends are, and the fine line between friendship and more.

  • Once you must fall in love with someone you believe to be perfect. You will learn that no one is perfect, and that you should never be treated as any less than you deserve.

  • And once you must fall in love with someone that is exactly like you. This will teach you about who you are, and who you want to be.

And when you’re through with all that, you learn that the people who care about you the most are the ones that you hurt, and the ones that hurt you are the ones that you needed the most.

But most of all, you learn that love is only a concept and is not something that can be defined, it is different to each person that experiences it.

And you will learn to respect each and every person on this earth, knowing that everyone only wants to be loved.

Love in depths

LOVE . . .

  • Love doesn't need to have any reason or any time duration even love should not make sense it just need to be felt.
  • In one glance you fall and each time you look at them you keep on falling deeper and deeper.
  • Love never need to be done because if you do it and then it's not love. It happens by own. Their presence tells you by itself that this is the one you want your heart to be broken from.
  • Truth is everyone will break it. But when you're in love ; then breaking of your heart from that person is worth it.
  • Some says find the one who is worth giving your heart to. I say you don't give your heart to them they just take it with their one smile. You never need to find them, chasing never gives you love it comes when it is destined to. Your heart goes by own.
  • If a feeling like love need reason, time and sense to justify that it's not real than it's wrong to call it love. It's just like any other thing which you are greedy for. It's selfless when you love; their happiness becomes your priority and if their happiness is being away from you then go away happily cause it's what best for them.
  • Their is no hypocrisy in it, you never need to ever pretend anything in love. It is something which comes from within.
  • That is why it is strongest emotion a human being can ever experience.
  • Love rules people because it's love.

It is true and pure love.. not easy to find . .  .

Brad Pitt About His Wife : True Love Story

Brad Pitt About His Wife :

"
My wife got sick. She was constantly nervous because of problems at work, personal life, her failures and problems with children.
She has lost 30 pounds and weighted about 90 pounds in her 35 years. She got very skinny, and was constantly crying. She was not a happy woman.
She had suffered from continuing headaches, heart pain and jammed nerves in her back and ribs. She did not sleep well, falling asleep only in the morning and got tired very quickly during the day.
Our relationship was on the verge of break up. Her beauty was leaving her somewhere, she had bags under her eyes, she was poking her head, and stopped taking care of herself.
She refused to shoot the films and rejected any role. I lost hope and thought that we’ll get divorced soon…
But then I decided to act on it. After all I've got the most beautiful woman on the earth. She is the idol of more than half of men and women on earth, and I was the one allowed to fall asleep next to her and to hug her shoulders.
I began to pamper her with flowers, kisses and compliments. I surprised her and pleased her every minute. I gave her lots of gifts and lived just for her. I spoke in public only about her. I incorporated all themes in her direction. I praised her in front of her own and our mutual friends.
You won’t believe it, but she blossomed. She became even better than before. She gained weight, was no longer nervous and she loved me even more than ever. I had no clue that she CAN love that much.
And then I realized one thing: The woman is the reflection of her man.
If you love her to the point of madness, she will become it.
"

Appreciate the lady at Home

My Wife DOES NOT WORK !!!
Conversation between a Husband (H) and a Psychologist (P):
P : What do you do for a living Mr. Bandy?
H : I work as an Accountant in a Bank.
P : Your Wife ?
H : She doesn't work. She's a Housewife only.
P : Who makes breakfast for your family in the morning?
H : My Wife, because she doesn't work.
P : At what time does your wife wake up for making breakfast?
H : She wakes up at around 5 am because she cleans the house first before making breakfast.
P : How do your kids go to school?
H : My wife takes them to school, because she doesn't work.
P : After taking your kids to school, what does she do?
H : She goes to the market, then goes back home for cooking and laundry. You know, she doesn't work.
P : In the evening, after you go back home from office, what do you do?
H : Take rest, because i'm tired due to all day works.
P : What does your wife do then?
H : She prepares meals, serving our kids, preparing meals for me and cleaning the dishes, cleaning the house then taking kids to bed.
Whom do you think works more, from the story above???
The daily routines of your wives commence from early morning to late night. That is called 'DOESN'T WORK'??!!
Yes, Being Housewives do not need Certificate of Study, even High Position, but their ROLE/PART is very important!
Appreciate your wives. Because their sacrifices are uncountable. This should be a reminder and reflection for all of us to understand and appreciate each others roles
